The shemagh is a traditional arab headdress/scarf worn by arab men of a square of cloth, it is folded and wrapped in many various unique styles around the head. Shemaghs are found in arid and dry climates to provide protection for direct sun exposure as well as dust and wind. The woven design originates from ancient Mesopotamia (referring to either fish nets or ear of grain). The shemagh is also known as a keffiyeh, (ya)shmagh, ghutrah, hattah, mashadah, military shemagh, middle eastern keffiyah or arab kefiya. The keffiyeh is usually folded in half, into a triangle, and the fold is worn across the forehead. Often, the keffiyeh is held in place by a black rope circlet, called an agal. Some wearers wrap the keffiyeh into a turban, while others wear it loosely draped around the back and shoulders. The shemagh is known as a traditional desert Arab head dress, which evolved from turbans in ancient times. The shemagh is essential for protecting the eyes, nose, mouth, ears and face from sand and elements during windy and desert conditions. It is also used as a neck warmer or hand towel. Military shemagshs are worn by soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan and abroad throughout the middle east. Retains heat and absorbs sweat in warm/hot conditions.
