Insignia (the plural of Latin insigne: emblem, symbol) is a symbol or token of personal power, status or office, or of an official body of government or jurisdiction. Insignia are especially used as an emblem of a specific or general authority. Rank insignia represents the rank of each personnel in the US military. The higher rank the officer is the more authority and responsibility the officer has. There are 3 categories in the rank system, enlisted members being the lowest, warrant officers being higher than enlisted members and commissioned officers being above all. Within each category there are ranks, for enlisted members the lowest rank is Private and the highest rank is Sergeant Major of the Army. Each rank is denoted with a different insignia identifying ones rank and if they are superior or inferior to other military personnel. The Army Combat Uniform (ACU) is the current combat uniform worn by the United States Army. It is the successor to the Battle Dress Uniform (BDU) and Desert Camouflage Uniform (DCU) worn during the 1980s and 1990s. Hook-and-loop fasteners consists of two layers: a "hook" side, which is a piece of fabric covered with tiny hooks, and a "loop" side, which is covered with even smaller and "hairier" loops. When the two sides are pressed together, the hooks catch in the loops and hold the pieces together. When the layers are separated, the strips make a characteristic "ripping" sound. Hook and loop is surprisingly strong. Generally military patches are attached to the front of the chest or on the side sleeve on the uniform.
